Signs are an important part of life and business. We send messages to those around us about who we are and what we are about. A 2012 Fed Ex survey found that 76% of consumers will enter a shop based upon the strength of its signage. 52% indicated that would be reluctant to enter a shop with little to no signage, and 60% said they would not enter businesses with poor signage. Your signs matter!
The design of your signage and branding can speak volumes about your business. The typography, color, size and materials used might portray a friendly customer service environment or perhaps a professional and respectable business. The elements a child care facility might use might be vastly different than the law firm down the block. Serious consideration to the perception of your customers is a must to creating the right experience for your customers.
By getting your signage and branding on point, you send a message that your customers can be assured of a seamless and professional experience with your business from start to finish.
There are signs that perhaps someone needs more care, like my dad.
Your business signs show that you care about your customers.
Because after all, life is about signs.

So here's a list of ordinary things I want to celebrate:
Eggs - I love eggs. I eat them every morning for breakfast, and darn it, it just makes me happy. Perhaps it's not the eggs - perhaps it's simply the mundane routine of getting my day going. No fuss. No debating. Just eggs...and some coffee, of course.
Sunshine - doesn't it just make you feel better to get out in the sunshine? Summer is probably my favorite season, so it's a good time for me to celebrate with friends and family outside. Fresh air and open skies do the soul some good.
Crickets - I really don't like insects of any kind, but listening to crickets means I'm enjoying a peaceful evening outside. We all need more of that kind of tranquility these days.
Cafe Mochas - I know that specialty coffees can be expensive, but it's a small pleasure I afford myself from time to time. The aroma. The taste...and oh, the whipped cream.
I know this is not my usual blog post for Signs and Such, but it felt good for a moment to imagine a world without stress and chaos. It felt good to celebrate the ordinary.
What's your list of ordinary celebrations?

But most of the things I've learned don't have anything to do with actually making a sign. It's more about the passion embodied in the signs we make.
Over the years, we've made signs for lots of customers, and until now, I never understand the underlying passions that those signs reflect.
Every sign has an overt message like the name and phone number of a business or directions for customers, product information or an event announcement.
Yet every sign also says something else.
It says:
I have been humbled to be a small part of all of these messages in our designs and our finished products over the past few weeks.
I have learned that the message a sign conveys is not really about what is says at face value. It's about the meaning behind that message and there's passion in being a small part of helping that message come alive.

I've spent the last three weeks designing simple yard signs for moms, dads, and students who also are grieving graduation. Maybe grief is a bit too dramatic, but given the significance I have placed on those events in my life, those memories tucked away in the back of my mind have a little bit of sadness to go along.
We have had an overwhelming response to our graduation/student signs - way more than I ever imagined. I guess it's safe to say that many people attribute great memories to graduations. Perhaps our simple yard signs will provide graduation memories for students and families to keep forever in the back of their minds as well.
